Description

Dušan Džamonja (Strumica, Macedonia, January 31, 1928 – Zagreb, January 14, 2009) Croatian sculptor, academic and author of architectural projects for museums, monuments, galleries, skyscrapers and mosques.

He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in the 1940s, lived and worked in Brussels, Vrsar and Zagreb. He organized his first exhibition in 1954, and won numerous awards for his work. In Vrsar, there is a memorial complex of his house with a studio and a sculpture park.

The basic materials he worked with are bronze, iron, corten steel and aluminum. Džamonja's monumental abstract sculptures have already been exhibited at Place de Vendome in Paris, Praca de Commercio in Lisbon, in front of the Palace of Justice in Brussels and in London's Regent's Park.

His performance at XXX was particularly significant for his career. to the Venice Biennale in 1960. when he was nominated for the Grand Prix of the biennale, and attracted the attention of international critics.
In addition to monumental concrete sculptures and a cycle of animal sculptures, he developed a specific expression in the technique of combining nails and burnt wood.

Since 1988, he has been an extraordinary member of SANU at the Department of Fine and Musical Arts, since May 20, 2004 he has been a regular member of HAZU.
He died on January 14, 2009 at the age of eighty.
