Description

Ivo Lozica was born on June 10, 1910 in Lumbarda, the first son in the family of Anica and Antun Lozica Barbareško. Studied stonemasonry school in Korčula. On the recommendation of his mentor, the sculptor Fran Kršinić, in 1926, as the first in his class at the academy, at the age of sixteen he was accepted into the class of Ivan Meštrović at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb.

He trained in Paris and with Ivan Meštrović. He worked in stone, bronze, marble, plaster, wood and terracotta, and he created his best works in stone with a special sense of harmony and beauty of form. He did expressive characters of heavy men, fishermen and nudes with emphasized voluminousness.

Ivo Lozica created numerous sculptures that have a prominent place in recent Croatian sculpture. There are also acts After Bathing, Spring and Female Torso. In his last sculptures, he moved away from rigid realistic design and emphasis on details, and moved into a complete embrace of form. In the marble Torso of a Woman, which he made near the end of his life, with the purity of form and gentle transitions, he came completely close to the modern understanding of the sculptural form.[3]

He was shot by Italian fascists on March 10, 1943 in Lumbarda.
