Description

Stephan Lupino (real name Ivan Lepen) (Varaždin, April 28, 1952) is a Croatian artistic photographer and sculptor.

In his native Varaždin, Lupino finished primary and secondary school, after which he went to London to study English. After studying in London, he went to New York, where he entered the acting conservatory with Stella Adler. During his stay in New York, he met the photographer Deborah Turbeville, who gave photography, as art, an avant-garde edge. Shortly after finishing his studies, he started publishing his works and thus got jobs in various fashion magazines. After the war, he became interested in human suffering and the human body, and these themes became the main motif in his works. The first such work was in 2003 under the title My Angels, and he gave most of the proceeds to Zagreb's Klaić Hospital.

Lupinism

Precisely in the period after the Homeland War until today, a new artistic direction appeared in Croatian painting created by Stephan Lupino, called Lupinism. Although there is no official definition, Lupinism is the style in which Stephan Lupino portrays subjects, and he is recognizable by his large and heavy sculptures and large canvas paintings. One of the most famous examples of Lupinism is the Fire Woman sculpture located in the Domenico Vacca Club in New York.
