Description

Messageries Maritimes was a French shipping company founded in 1851. The Sandy Hook poster (1879-1960) boasts the supremacy of Messageries Maritimes routes that made it possible to travel “around the world”.

Messageries Maritimes traces its roots back to 1851, when Albery Rostand and Ernest Simons merged their shipping companies to greatly expand their routes. Originally, these routes were primarily in the Middle East, which proved useful during the French Crimean War for the deployment of French troops. As a reward for their military support, the company was given a route from France to Brazil which greatly expanded the company. After rebuilding after World War I, the company truly went 'worldwide' with access to the newly constructed Panama Canal.

Sandy Hook (1879 – 1960), was a pseudonym for the French artist Georges Taboureau. He is best known for his numerous marine paintings and posters, and he was even declared the official painter of the French Navy.

This is an original vintage poster; not a reproduction. This poster has been conserved, covered with a canvas backing and is in excellent condition.
