Julius Knifer (Osijek, April 23th 1924. - Paris, December 7 2004.), he was hrvatski painter.

One of the most important Croatian artists 20th century. Knifer studied painting in the beginning of the fifties in Zagreb Academy of Fine Arts, in order to end the fifties was one of the founders and a prominent member of the group Gorgona which is in Zagreb operated from 1959. do 1966. as a more important segment of modern Croatia of art. Years 1961. participates in the first exhibition of "New Tendencies" in Zagreb as a member of it movement, 1973. participates in the biennial in São Paulo, To 1976. na Venice Biennale together with sculptor Ivan Kožarić.[1]

Kniferova's basic and recognizable motif of art is from the sixties of the last century meander, performed in countless variants and in different techniques- from pencils do oil on canvas, collage i murals. Knifer's meandering the shape is reduced to uniform rhythm continuous forms i contrast black and white, to later include i color.

Years 2001. Knifer is selected by the selectors Zvonka Maković represented Croatia na Venice Biennale, the same year he was declared an honorary citizen Osijek, and a year later he got it, again from a pen Maković who followed the artist's work from early on 1970s years of the last century, the first comprehensive and comprehensive monograph, after it had already been introduced to the French audience.
