Description

Vladimir Becić was born on June 1, 1886 in Brod na Sava. He studied law in Zagreb and painting in Munich and Paris, where he worked as a cartoonist in the magazine Le Rire. He worked in Osijek, Belgrade and Bitola, and during the First World War he was a correspondent and war painter of the magazine L'Illustration on the Thessaloniki front.

From 1919 to 1923, he lived in Blažu near Sarajevo, and then went to Zagreb, where he was a professor at the Academy of Arts until 1947. He was a member of the groups "Trojica" and "Četvorica". His earliest works from the time of his schooling in Munich, together with the works of Račić and Kraljević, form the complex of Croatian painting modernity.

From the very beginning, Becić's painterly expression was directed more towards modeling and clarity than towards lyricism. His sketches in oil, and especially in watercolor, express the freshness of the immediate painting experience. In the last years of his life, he worked on motifs from Istria and the work site on the Neretva.

Vladimir Becić died on May 24, 1954 in Zagreb.
