Description

Željko Kipke was born in 1953 in Čakovec. He graduated in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb (1971 – 1976). He was an associate of the Master's workshop Lj. Ivančić and N. Reiser 1976 – 1980.

In New York, he exhibited at a group exhibition at Artists Space in 1989. During 1991, he stayed in Marseilles, where he held a solo exhibition. His paintings were bought for the Peter Stuyvesant collection in Amsterdam, the FRAC collection in Toulouse (Les Abattoirs) and the Museum der Moderner Kunst in Vienna. He represented the Republic of Croatia at the Venice Biennale in 1993, and two years later at the Cairo Biennale.

He writes essays and reviews about experimental film and art practice in the daily press and magazines. He has been a full member of the International Association of Art Critics (AICA) since 1997. He participated in Szeemann's author's exhibition Blood & Honey / Future's in the Balkans in Klosterneuburg (Vienna) in 2003. He was the selector of the Croatian pavilion at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007.

He published six books: Illuminators of the new cycle, Zagreb, 1989; Guide to the subterraneus, Zagreb, 1992; Beware of imitations, Zagreb, 1993; From Abundance to the Moon, Zagreb, 1998; Any resemblance to real people and events is intentional, Zagreb 2004; From February to February, Zagreb 2005.
