Description
Miljenko Stančić (Varaždin, March 1, 1926 – Zagreb, May 13, 1977) was a Croatian painter and graphic artist.
He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in 1949, and was a member of the "Five". In addition to painting, he was involved in the creation of illustrations for newspapers, books and magazines, as well as scenography. Critics usually classify his painting as surrealism, magical realism or fantastic painting.
He exhibited independently in Zagreb, Belgrade, Varaždin, Rijeka, Vukovar, Split, Ljubljana, Paris, Brussels. He had retrospective exhibitions in Zagreb in 1971 and posthumously in 1981. His retrospective exhibition and Gallery opened in Varaždin in 2006. He taught at the academy in Zagreb from 1961 until his untimely death at the age of 51. Although he died in Zagreb, he was buried at the Varaždin Cemetery. Several monographs were published about Stančić's life and work, and several films were made.
