Description

Miroslav Šutej was born on April 29, 1936 in Duga Resa, where he finished elementary school, and in Zagreb he finished high school and the Academy of Fine Arts, which he entered in 1956 - department of painting and graphics. He was part of the first generation of graphics students at the Academy, and graduated in 1961 in the class of professor Marijan Detoni.

While still a student, he exhibited for the first time at the 1st Biennale in Rijeka, and he held his first solo exhibition in 1962 in the Gallery of the Student Center in Zagreb, just one year after graduating. At the exhibition, it was noticed how different his way of working was from the generation of that time, who were more inclined to EXAT 51. In the period from 1961 to 1963, he was an associate of Krsto Hegedušić's master workshop, and in 1963 he participated in the 3rd Youth Biennale in Paris where he wins the Grand-prix (for painting). This award enabled him to stay in Paris from 1964 to 1965. From 1978 until his death in 2005, he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. He was a member of HAZU. He was involved in scenography, interior design and graphic design (he designed the Croatian coat of arms as well as the Croatian kuna banknotes).

He also designed the first jersey of the Croatian national football team, one of the most recognizable Croatian brands, according to which all other versions of the jersey were created until today, he also designed the poster for the first historic friendly match of the Croatian national football team since the establishment of independence against the USA national team.
